What to do when your email is hacked

by Lou Horton on November 25, 2014

At one point or another, most of us will fall victim to some form of hacking over the Internet.  The most common form is having cloud based email services such as yahoo mail or live mail hacked.  When this happens you frequently lose access to the email account and the account starts to be used for nefarious purposes such as email spam, obtaining fraudulent accounts etc.

1.  If your computer has ANYTHING suspicious such as extra pop ups, warning messages or any indication that you might have a virus or malware, stop using the computer (and power it down) until you can have it professionally cleaned.

2.  If you used the same password or security questions as you did on the hacked account on ANY other account.  Change the password AND security questions immediately.  Do not use the same passwords at multiple sites and make sure your passwords are complex.  At least 8 characters, at least one uppercase, a number and a special character is recommended at a minimum.  This will significantly reduce the odds of suffering from a brute force attack.

3.  Once you get access to the hacked email (probably by contacting the service provider) change the password and security questions immediately.  Check the account to make sure that there are no fraudulent “reply-to” addresses or forwarding addresses configured on the account.

4.  Keep an extra close watch on any accounts that you might have accessed in the past using the compromised email account.  There is a lot of information that the hacker was able to access when they had full access to your email account.

Having your email hacked can be a scary and frustrating situation.  In order to reduce the chances of this happening, keep your passwords and security questions both unique and complex.  Even if you have to write all of them down and stick the list under your keyboard you will significantly reduce the chance of Internet based hacking.  As always if you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 630-444-7220 or contact us at https://computer-repair-now.com .
